FAQs

Explore answers to the most commonly asked questions about our facility, programs, and membership options at CrossFit Silicon Valley.

  • Is Kyokushin Karate really full contact? Isn’t that dangerous?

Yes — Kyokushin is a full-contact martial art. Our organization, the Phoenix Karate-do Association Kyokushinkai International, emphasizes strong, practical techniques with a focus on building mental toughness and a non-quitting spirit. Training is progressive and safety-focused. No student is pushed beyond their readiness, and while injuries are possible (as with any physical activity), our goal is always to train safely and return stronger the next day.

  • Do I need to learn Japanese to participate?

We use traditional Japanese terminology during training to honor the art’s origins. Techniques, kata, and movements are named in Japanese, but you’ll learn them naturally over time. Our association also offers Phoenix Budo, a detailed reference guide, available through your instructor to help you along the way.

  • Do I need to be in shape before starting?

Not at all. Come as you are. Everyone begins their karate journey from a different place. The important thing is simply to begin — waiting to be “fit enough” often means never starting. Kyokushin is designed to meet you where you are and help you grow.

  • What should I wear to my first class?

Wear loose, comfortable athletic clothing suitable for movement and sweating. For safety reasons, no shoes, socks, or jewelry are allowed during class. Once you’re ready to commit, you can purchase a dogi (karate uniform) through your instructor.
